  • Carmen (Bizet)

    Glyndebourne Opera Festival
    May 2024 - Jun 2024
    • Her Escamillo is the best I’ve seen: muscle-man with name on bare chest, vocally daring – again Ticciati gives the superb Dmitry Cheblykov space to maneouvre – and backed up by high-octane crowd.

    • Cheblykov is an exceptionally good singer, with a beautiful warm tone, a charismatic stage presence and excellent acting skills.

    • at Glyndebourne’s season opener, Dmitry Cheblykov turned it into a glorious piece of theatre. We could have been watching Mick Jagger in his prime working an adoring festival crowd into a frenzy. Cheblykov swaggered, he glad-handed, he capered about the stage – the epitome of the alpha male supremely self-confident that everyone is eating out of his hand. Cheblykov's baritone matched his movement, deep and full in the big entries, switching to a perfect pianissimo for that moment when the crowd goes silent before the bull is to charge.

    • The audience favourite is Dmitry Cheblykov as the toreador Escamillo, whose copious attractions include an astonishing body-builder’s physique and a crisply incisive delivery.
