About Huang

Music Director: Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra Principal Conductor: China Philharmonic Orchestra Artistic Director and Chief Conductor: Kunming Nie'er Symphony Orchestra

Born in Beijing, 31-year-old Huang Yi has established himself as one of the brightest young conductors in China.

In 2016, Huang was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Kunming Nie’er Symphony Orchestra and in 2019 took up the positions as both Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Ballet of China and Principal Conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra. Huang Yi studied at China’s Central Conservatory of Music and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Berlin, and is now a conducting faculty member of both institutions.

In 2009 he was assistant conductor to Seiji Ozawa at the Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku Project in Japan and in 2013 assisted Christian Thielemann in a co-production between the Beijing Music Festival and the Salzburg Easter Festival of Wagner’s Parsifal.

A regular guest conductor with all the major Chinese orchestras including Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen, Huang conducted the world premiere of Andy Akiho’s Ricochet Ping Pong Concerto with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the 2015 Shanghai MISA Festival.

In 2023, Huang Yi was appointed as the Music Director of Guangzhou Symphony.
