About Jonathan

Artistic Director: Handel & Haydn Society Music Director: Les Violons du Roy Artistic Director: Arcangelo Artistic Director: Tetbury Festival

Jonathan Cohen has forged a remarkable career as a conductor, cellist and keyboardist. He is equally at home in Baroque opera and Classical symphonic repertoire.
In the 2023/24 season he guest-conducts Budapest Festival Orchestra, Kammerorchester Basel, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège and Hessischer Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester.

In his first season as their new Artistic Director, Jonathan leads the Handel & Haydn Society in Baroque masterpieces including Handel’s Israel in Egypt and Messiah. He conducts Messiah with San Francisco Symphony, whilst projects with Les Violons du Roy include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and a North American tour with Miloš Karadaglić.

Jonathan founded Arcangelo in 2010 to create high-quality bespoke projects. The ensemble was the first to be named Baroque Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall and has toured to halls and festivals including Philharmonie Berlin, Vienna Konzerthaus, Barbican Centre, Kölner Philharmonie, Salzburg Festival, MA Festival Bruges and BBC Proms.

Arcangelo’s latest recordings include Tiranno with Kate Lindsey (Alpha: Sunday Times Record of the Year 2021) and Sacroprofano with Tim Mead (Alpha: 2023).

Jonathan is based in London

    • Cohen achieved visceral excitement by exploring the subtle details that make the music sing. In concertos by Zelenka and Handel, he worked like a sculptor, shaping passages between the orchestral and solo forces, paying agile attention to every arc and turn.
