About Laurence
Highlights in Laurence’s 2023/24 season include debuts with the Opéra-Comique, the Opéra de Dijon, Oper Köln, and a return to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. His concert engagements include Bach’s Matthäus-Passion (Netherlands Chamber Orchestra/Ivor Bolton & Wiener Symphoniker/Matthew Halls), Handel’s Messiah (Royal Northern Sinfonia/Peter Whelan, Britten Sinfonia/Sofi Jeannin & Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal de Versailles/Gaétan Jarry) and a European tour of Mozart’s Requiem (Ensemble Pygmalion/Raphaël Pichon).
Laurence studied as an ABRSM Vocal Scholar at the Royal College of Music in London, and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He was a member of the studio of the Opéra national de Paris during the 2022/23 season. An inaugural Lies Askonas Fellow, he was the winner of the 2018 Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers and is the winner of the 2022 Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition and the 2022 Cesti Competition at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik.
Laurence began his formal training as a chorister with the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum, and won the title of BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year in 2009, subsequently making his solo debut at the Royal Albert Hall. He appears as treble soloist on a number of recordings, including the Grammy-nominated album, Handel’s L’Allegro, Penseroso ed il Moderato with the Gabrieli Consort/Paul McCreesh. He has appeared in masterclasses with Dame Sarah Connolly, Roderick Williams, Kathryn Harries and James Gilchrist and has given recitals at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin and Cheltenham Festival.

Named after the Italian composer Pietro Antonio Cesti, who made Innsbruck a centre of Italian opera north of the Alps in the mid-17th century, the competition is aimed at young singers from all over the world with a special talent and training for the extremely diverse baroque opera genre. In the meantime, the Cesti Competition has become one of the most important singing competitions in this field.
