Long Yu, the distinguished Chinese conductor with an extensive international reputation, is Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra, and Honorary Music Director for Life and Chair of the Artistic Committee of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra.
He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Founder of the Beijing Music Festival, Maestro Yu was Artistic Director from 1998 to 2018. He is the Co-Director of the MISA Summer Festival in Shanghai.
This season sees Long make debuts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin as well as returning to Seoul Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra with soloists including Hilary Hahn, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Augustin Hadelich and Matthias Goerne.
Recent highlights include appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Symphony, Adelaide Symphony and Auckland Philharmonia.
In July 2021, Deutsche Grammophon released The Song of the Earth featuring Long Yu leading the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and four vocalists. The album features complementary works by Mahler and Chinese composer Xiaogang Ye inspired by the same centuries-old Chinese poetry, bridging the music of the East and the West. This follows Long Yu’s acclaimed first recording for Deutsche Grammophon, called Gateways with Maxim Vengerov.
