About Raúl
Born in Durango, Mexico, Raúl Gutiérrez is quickly establishing himself as one of the rising lyric tenors of his generation. His 24/25 season includes performances as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème with the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl, a debut at the Salzburg Festspiele as Marcellus in Thomas's Hamlet, and a role debut as Arturo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Zurich Opernhaus.
Gutiérrez notably concluded his 22/23 season by making his European debut in the title role of Massenet’s Werther at the Bregenzer Festspiele, accompanied by the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg and under the baton of Claire Levacher. For this performance, he received a nomination as "Best rising Young Talent" from the prestigious Österreichische Musiktheaterpreis
Other previous highlights include several role debuts such as Albazar in Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia and Daniele in Verdi’s I Vespri Siciliani as member of the International Opera Studio at the Opernhaus Zürich,performances at the Tour Eiffel as a member with the academy Opera for Peace in Paris, and debuts in the roles of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and Don Basilio and Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Symphonic Orchestra of Morelia.
Raúl has worked with conductors like Marzio Conti, Stephan Veselka, and Rodrigo Macías, and has developed his vocal technique through lessons and masterclasses with César Ulloa, Emilio Pons, Jennifer Rowley, Brian Jadge, and many more.
He studied with the renowned Mexican tenor Alfredo Portilla at the Faculty of Music of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City, following previous studies in Architecture. In 2019, Raúl emerged as the winner of the “XXX Francisco Araiza Competition” at UNAM, granting him the opportunity to work with tenor Francisco Araiza at the European Music Institute of Vienna (EMIV) in Vienna, Austria. Raúl then won several awards in the XXXVIII Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition, including the Zarzuela Award, Bellas Artes Award, Francisco Araiza Award, and MOS (Mexico Opera Studio) Award. Additionally, in 2022 he received scholarships to attend the Sewanee Summer Music Festival as an Opera Fellow and the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria.
